Since its inception, GM's IT Leadership has provided an extensive curriculum of education and training in support of organizational and employee skill development. Training priorities and delivery have evolved around core IT technical skills, advanced technical skills, project management, and critical common processes. By making training available, GM IT is investing in you and your future. You, in return, are expected to invest your time and effort by taking advantage of the training being offered. To help you stay focused, here is a summary of our major training & development initiatives to help you achieve your critical skills as well as your 32-hour Technical Training Requirement for 2010:
- Every GM IT employee is required to take the Collaboration Training Workshop, Course 36835. Your enthusiastic participation is critical to the impact and ultimate success of this program. This class will provide the IT community with a full set of collaboration skills that will promote greater efficiency within the workplace. Upon completion of the workshop, we want our IT Professionals to spread the "viral" message on the use of Collaboration tools to all of GM by demonstrating their tremendous capabilities in their daily work routine. Your job is to provide the case for change in integrating these tools into everyone's daily way of conducting business, which will result in greater efficiency. To register, click here to go to the Global Learning Management System. Please Note the Course Code, 36835, you will need it. Upon completion, you will achieve 4 hours of Technical Training.
- GM Leadership established internal certification programs. Based on completing a set number of training hours, the courses for each certification are made up of current classroom courses and Web-based courses. For those of you who are geographically dispersed, do not have the time to attend instructor lead training, or where specific instructor lead classes are not offered, focus on the Web-based courses. Web-based courses are available 24 x 7. We are currently updating all Web-based courses so stay tuned for new/replaced course offerings this summer. To help you determine which certification best fits your IT role, please click on Job Profiles/Learning Guides. The tracks (with additional details by clicking on the hyper-links), and the hours needed to complete the certification in each track are listed below.
- The highly successful Technology Briefing Program counts toward your Technical Training requirement. See the fast-paced world of technology through an interactive dialogue with leading industry experts via "Live Meeting." Tech Briefs are recorded in "Live Meeting" so if you're unable to view live, you'll be able to view at your leisure. - In 1999, GM and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) formed a partnership to create a new competitive advantage in software engineering (SE) and information technology (IT) within the automotive industry. This advantage entailed the creation of technical degree programs that enabled full-time GM employees to pursue advanced master’s degrees while continuing to support the needs of GM. In less than ten years, these degrees produced 153 graduates who applied the technical knowledge learned to realize over $30M in documented first-year cost savings, six major quality process implementations and one pending patent. This result translated into a 500% return on employee development through tuition investment. No other university-corporate partnership and related academic programs can boast of such an accomplishment. Successfully completed Carnegie Mellon Classes count as 60 hours of Technical Training Hours.
- Technical Courses taken outside of GM may count toward your Technical Training requirement. Upon completion, please complete the form by clicking on Non GM Learning Technical Training Request Approval Form and submit to your Information Officer for approval.
