Skills for Success is the foundational curriculum for all of IT Global Learning. This six-course series provides a broad-based introduction to the use of Information Technology with a GM-specific focus. The overall objective of the program is to have all participants develop a common vocabulary and knowledge set with respect to IT. Topic areas include networking, application development, intranets, and other areas of interest.
At the current time, the IT Global Learning infrastructure is in transition to a new networked-computing architecture based on a wide variety of technologies. In order to succeed, it is critical that IT Global Learning Project Managers have a firm grasp of these technologies, the benefits associated with their use, and how they may best be applied. The purpose of this course is to explain the motivation for this transition, describe the new technologies, and indicate how they might be applied within GM.

Participants gain an understanding of the current and emerging hardware, software and middleware architectures that comprise the IT Global Learning infrastructure. Participants learn to assess and choose appropriate architectures and infrastructure support systems.

This course provides a broad foundation in the principles and operation of communications networks with an emphasis on their relevance to GM's current and next-generation applications.

You acquire a basic understanding of programming languages and techniques by developing a small networked application. In addition, you learn about the need to consider operational and security parameters in the development stage.

Participants gain the knowledge needed to navigate the Internet, plan for, operate and secure a Web site, and understand e-commerce applications in the GM context.

This is a capstone workshop course for the IT Fundamentals program that requires participants to apply the knowledge acquired in the previous courses. Using a case study approach, and working in teams, participants develop a high-level proposal to solve a GM-related problem. Participants gain an understanding of how to access IT Global Learning resources when additional subject matter expertise is required.
